As with many maples, the flowers are rather attractive close up, but are not particularly showy from a distance. Small reddish flowers in spring give way to samaras which ripen in late summer to early fall. Its name means 'a small cluster of three rivers'. The plant is noted for its layered foliage and almost contorted look, but especially for its fall colors. Some Japanese Maples have an upright form (Acer palmatum) while others feature a weeping habit (Acer palmatum dissectum) with strong cascading weeping branches. 'Mikawa yatsubusa' is a very small and compact Japanese maple cultivar in the Sapindaceae (soapberry) family. 'Crimson Queen' is a popular cultivar noted for its excellent leaf color retention throughout the growing season. There are however countless dwarf Japanese Maple varieties that do not exceed 4-15 ft. Most dwarf Japanese maples are slow growers, but this one is a little quicker in growth. This maple gets its name from its drooping branches and long leaves that cascade downwards like water. Each leaf has several lobes (typically 5–7) that all originate from one point looking like an open hand with outstretched fingers. Of the weeping variety, the Waterfall dwarf Japanese maple is one of the smallest. Specific epithet is in reference to the palmate nature of the leaves. Genus name is the Latin name for a maple tree. Dissectum means deeply cut in reference to the deeply cut, feathery nature of the leaves. Young trees tend toward a medium growth rate, 10 to 15 feet over a 10 year period. The hardiness zone for the species form is zone 5. Depending on the cultivar, USDA zones from 5 to 8. These dissected-leaf shrubs are commonly called laceleaf Japanese maple, cutleaf Japanese maple or threadleaf Japanese maple. Japanese maple is a magnificent specimen or accent plant and performs well in a grouping or in a shrub border. Palmate leaves, each having 7-11 deeply incised lobes, are deeply cut to the base of the leaf. It features red spring growth, green summer foliage and yellow, dark red and gold in the fall. Morphology: This small garden tree, when grown under ideal conditions, reaches 4’ in height and 6’ in width at full maturity. Japanese maples are native to southeast Korea and central and south Japan. Description Beni Hime is known as dwarf Japanese maple as it only attains a very short height at full maturity. It is known for its interesting leaf coloring. dissectum is typically a much smaller, rounded, slow-growing shrubby form (often with cascading branching) that rarely matures to more than 12' tall with a larger spread. Kiyohime Japanese maple is a dwarf, spreading maple cultivar in the Sapindaceae (soapberry) family. Fall color includes an often spectacular combination of shades of yellow, red, purple and bronze. Small reddish-purple flowers in umbels bloom in spring (April) followed by winged samaras in pairs which ripen in September-October. Each palmate green leaf (2-5" long) has 5 to 7 but less frequently 9 toothed lobes. General plant form is rounded to broad-rounded, often with low branching. Acer palmatum, commonly called Japanese Maple, is a deciduous shrub or small tree that typically grows to 10-25' (infrequently to 40') tall.
